Avatar: The Way of Water is an upcoming American 3D computer-animated epic action film produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and written and directed by James Cameron. It is the fourth and final installment in the Avatar film series, and is scheduled for release on December 17, 2020. The film is set in the mid-22nd century, when humans are colonizing Pandora, a lush moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system, and discover a mineral called unobtanium. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the Na’vi, a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora, and the humans are forced to interact with the Na’vi to negotiate a settlement. The film will follow the journey of a young Navi woman, Neytiri, as she becomes a member of the Avatar Program and learns to connect with her avatar, a genetically engineered human-Navi hybrid, in order to help the humans and Na’vi prevent a war and protect the planet.

The film’s title refers to a genetically engineered Navi body + human hybrid, operated by a human driver via a neural link, that is used to interact with the native population.

The film is a sequel to Avatar (2009), making it the second film in the Avatar franchise. Cameron is producing the film with Jon Landau, with Josh Friedman originally announced as the writer.
